Art for Charity takes over Michael Mitchell

The doors of Michael Mitchell Gallery were wide open to the fresh air and curious shoppers stopping in to check out the Art for Charity pop-up shop on Saturday. Featuring six vendors in support of six nonprofit charities, the event included vintage clothier Seek Vintage, Taashki Handbags, Bangs Shoes, Nostalgic Graphic Tees, MISIU Cosmetics, and jewelry from Lauren Amos Designs.

Each vendor was given a table and a section of the room to set up shop, displaying rows of colorful children’s T-shirts, racks of vintage finds, cake stands glittering with earrings, and plates of enticing cookies. Aside from the products, the walls of the gallery were hung with colorful, innovative pieces, from a bike helmet-turned-turtle shell to larger-than-life, vibrant underwater scenes.

Shoppers snapped up John Stango’s stylish iPhone cases, sleekly designed with icons of American pop art. Founded in Charleston by Andrew Petersen, MISIU cosmetics stays true to its roots, offering a range of lip glosses in colors like “Rainbow Row,” “Doing the Charleston,” and “On the Battery.” While whittling down the selection may have been difficult, Lauren Amos also offered easy gift ideas with her fun collection of jewelry. Hannah Davis of Bangs Shoes, sporting a pair of her own blue high tops, was thrilled to be taking orders for her charitable cause.

With each designer’s fee to participate in the pop-up shop directly benefiting the American Red Cross, Charleston Waterkeeper, Crisis Ministries, Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital, Roper St. Francis Ryan White Program, and MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, the event supported great causes as well as Charleston’s seemingly unending local talent.
