We know you’ve heard of John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, but how about Giuseppe Zangara, Samuel Byck, Lynette Fromme, and Sara Jane Moore? The names may ring a bell because they belong to the men and women who either assassinated or attempted to assassinate United States presidents. And each one of the characters is the subject of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical Assassins that examines their nefarious characters. a musical noted for its examination of the attempted as well as successful assassinations of U.S. presidents through a darkly humorous revue style. In this decade-hopping musical, the titular assassins share conversations in a bar, gather at a shooting range, and watch each other as they attempt to carry out their crimes. “It is really going to push audience members’ boundaries,” says Brett Laing, director of CofC’s production of Assassins. “Even though the assassins are often portrayed in a goofy manner, the musical is very dark. You can almost — I hate to say it — sympathize with the assassins.”
