The local arts scene takes a look at some serious issues with the world premiere of AWOL: A Soldier’s Story. The play, written and directed by Joanna Crowell, takes an uncompromising look at the bitter realities of the Iraq War. AWOL was originally the by-product of a qualitative research course at Canada’s King’s University, where Crowell interviewed several U.S war resisters and veterans; these interviewees would later end up as characters in her play. The cast of AWOL features PURE veteran David Mandel, College of Charleston alum Katie Huard, and Charleston Crescent Stage founder Paul Whitty. Attending the show won’t break the bank, as the premiere of the play also marks the debut of PURE’s “pay what you can” ticket pricing. In an effort to cater to everyone’s budget, buyers can pay any amount between $15 and $30 for tickets, both online and at the box office. —Jansen Cumbie
