Be Her Freedom

When: Sun., June 24, 6 p.m. 2012

The A21 Campaign and WED wedding and event planning are teaming up to host Be Her Freedom, an event that hopes to raise awareness about human trafficking. A21 is a global organization that has recently established its first East Coast affiliate in Charleston, comprised of over 300 volunteers and a core group that carries out day-to-day operational activities. The group’s founder, Christine Caine, will travel all the way from Los Angeles to speak to attendees about human trafficking — the second largest global organized crime, with 27 million slaves worldwide — on a global scale and a local one, offering solutions to the widespread problem. In addition to the speech, the event will also include hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, plus an art exhibit put together by six local artists. “It’s basically a three-pronged installation,” says Sara Ginthner from A21 Carolinas. “It walks you through what it might feel like visually to be a trafficking victim. It’s based on the hope a victim can have, and what it feels like to be one.” Ginthner hopes the event will be an enlightening one, opening Charleston’s eyes to the issue. “We have all kinds of ways to get involved,” says Ginthner, “and the more people that are involved and educated, the quicker we can solve this problem.”
