Benjamin Hollingsworth

When: Fri., July 31, 6-9 p.m. 2009

The Upper King Design District has gotten a fresh dose of design with Aster Hall, a new art gallery specializing in contemporary art and funky jewelry and handmade gifts that “rebels against the standard gallery concept.” Their first big art show features Benjamin Hollingsworth, an emerging artist more recently known as a soccer player for the Charleston Battery as well as a few European teams. An injury forced Hollingsworth to make a major career/life change a few years ago, and art became his focus. While the shift is impressive, knowing that Hollingsworth is self-taught is almost mind-blowing. Using everything from oil to spray paint on various unique canvases, he’s been compared to fellow local artist Tim Hussey because of his colorful, textural, abstract approach to serious themes. —Erica Jackson
