Best All Shovels & Rope Radio Station

WYLA 97.5

Staff Pick

Looking back, I should’ve known something curious was up. I received a mysterious message from someone I didn’t know, telling me to turn it to 97.5 because something mighty strange was going on. At the time, I was in an editorial meeting, and we were likely deep into discussing this year’s Best of Charleston issue — sadly, I don’t think we’ll be doing a juggalo-themed BOC anytime soon. But the point is this: On the way home, I turned to 97.5, and I was stunned to find what might’ve been an obscure song by Kraftwerk playing and then, if memory serves me correctly, a bluegrass tune and then something punkish. Intrigued, I stayed with the station over the next few days as it morphed into the world’s first all Shovels & Rope station. That format — a tongue-in-cheeker — has since been abandoned, and WYLA has settled on an all-local format. There are some stinkers there for sure, but you’ll find plenty of lost gems and, of course, ShoRo. It has since become one of my go-to stations. Here’s hoping they’ll get DJs soon. I’d sure love to know who’s playing. —Chris Haire
