Best Artistic Use of a Seasoning

Motoi Yamamoto’s Saltworks

Staff Pick

It was an absolute zoo at the opening of Motoi Yamamoto’s Saltworks: Return to the Sea, as viewers lined up to take in the exhibit from the tall platform (created especially for the show by students at the Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston). It’s amazing what Yamamoto can do with a little bit of Morton’s — actually, more like 194 cans worth — which he turned into a frothy, swirling hurricane of white on the floor of the gallery for this Spoleto show. At its closing, people were invited to come scrape the salt off the floor and return it to the sea. The effort took 45 minutes and a lot of Plexiglas, credit cards, and helping hands.
