If locals were only vaguely familiar with the Belgium-based abbey brewery before this winter, they’re practically experts now. Chimay chose Charleston as the first city in a new U.S. marketing push for the red-labeled Première, the blue-labeled Grande Réserve, and the white-labeled Triple. By way of numerous beer and cheese tastings, dinners, and “chalice nights” all over town, Chimay made a big splash in the Charleston market. Luc “Bobo” Van Mechelen, a special project and sales manager of Manneken-Brussel Imports, took up residence downtown for the four-week mini-tour. His Flemish charm and French-tinged accent helped win over the town.
