Best Benefit for a Friend in Need

Mac'n at the 'Drome at the Hippodrome

Staff Pick

In December, when word got out that local country/rock musician Mac Leaphart was recovering from brain surgery on a non-cancerous tumor and was sidelined from gigging, friends and colleagues in the Charleston music community rallied, organizing a massive benefit concert in January at the amphitheater-like Hippodrome. Nicknamed Mac'n at the 'Drome, the fundraiser was a multimedia event featuring series of video segments and live performances. Local promoters Ben Bounds (of Follywood Productions), Joel Frank, and members of the Awendaw Green family presented a unique show of support to a sold-out crowd. Members of Guild-Ridden Troubadour played the role of house band. Special guests included members of Five Way Friday, Joal Rush, Mark Bryan, Danielle Howle, Bobby Houck, John Wesley Satterfield, and Shovels and Rope, among many others. It was the concert highlight of the year.
