Best Budget Disaster

Staff Pick

We’ve all spent a little time in the red, but when it was revealed that the Charleston County School District was looking at an $18 million shortfall for its past year’s budget, many were left wondering where it all went. Well, about $8.7 million was the result of payroll overspending in 2014 and the remainder was overestimating the amount of tax revenue the district would receive. Now the CCSD will be tightening its belt throughout the upcoming year, increasing class sizes and maybe holding a few extra bake sales. The important thing is that we’ve all learned a valuable lesson in accounting and accountability. —Dustin Waters
