Located at the busy corner of King and Spring streets, Read Brothers is an old-school Charleston destination filled with eclectic fabrics, goods, and — surprisingly — high-end audio gear. The Read family has been operating a business at this location since 1912, and the building looks like it hasn't been touched much since then. But this year, with The Post and Courier floating plans for developing their land in the area and with new hotels, apartment buildings, and restaurants inching their way up to that part of King Street, owner Tom Read has publicly said he's considering renovating the top two floors, which were apartments back in the '40s. We can't think of a better way to liven up that corner, and we couldn't imagine a more interesting landlord than Read, who is an avid supporter of the local art scene. We say go for it.
