Best Campaign for Entertainment Purposes

Ginny Deerin

Staff Pick

We assumed that after managing Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr.’s successful re-election campaigns for years Ginny Deerin would have a few tricks up her sleeve when she ran for Secretary of State in 2014. What we didn’t expect were the theatrical, creative, and sometimes downright bizarre stunts she pulled while running her own campaign. Among other things, Deerin debated a cardboard cutout in lieu of incumbent Mark Hammond, rode a bicycle 90 miles from Spartanburg to Columbia to protest Hammond’s taxpayer-funded work commute, and even created a cheeky YouTube ad in which ex-South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford opened up about “Mark” (Hammond, that is). Now that Deerin has entered the race for mayor of Charleston, we’re dying to see what she comes up with next.
