Charleston native Charlton Singleton already enjoys a sturdy reputation as a brassy man with a load of talent and technique. In addition to his academic work, he’s played in a variety of jazz, funk, and rock bands over the decades, playing trumpet and cornet like a seasoned pro. These days, local concertgoers enjoy his skills as the flamboyant conductor of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra (CJO). At recent concerts at the Charleston Music Hall, Singleton often looked more like he was dancing and pumping his fists in approval than conducting. His band and his audience got the beat and the message, though.
