Best Conservationist Riding Into the Sunset

Dana Beach

Staff Pick

There aren’t many political issues that all South Carolinians generally agree on. Like a lot of places, we have our opinions and we’ve had them for a long time. But in the state where the license plate tagline for years was “Smiling faces, beautiful places,” most people agree that watching over those pretty places is a universally agreed-upon good thing. Just don’t call folks environmentalists, we prefer “conservationists” here. And it’s under that premise that Dana Beach set off to build the Charleston-based Coastal Conservation League into a powerhouse environmental advocacy group that attracted both politicians and concerned neighbors to speak out on behalf of their beautiful places. Dana is charting a new course soon, and it’s unknown what’s next for the CCL, but Charleston and the fragile coastal environment we call home is a better place for his decades of effort. Thanks, Dana. —Sam Spence
