Proving once again that you get what you pay for, The Huffington Post published an ode to Charleston’s fashionable shops in September by a blogger who was only identified by the name Shoptiques. The headline was “Perfect Day in Charleston, S.C.,”
and man, it was just a perfect encapsulation of what this city is all about. “When I took my first trip to the Carolinas,” Shoptiques wrote, “I was expecting to go hiking in the mountains, ride in four wheelers, jam out at a country concert, maybe run through a field of corn, and of course, eat delicious food.” Between glittering bits of prose like that one and some on-point descriptions of “the connector” (i.e. the Ravenel Bridge) and the downtown College of Charleston campus’s “plantation homes,” it’s safe to say Shoptiques is ready to join the Faulknerian ranks of Oxford American contributors when it comes to nuanced depictions of the South. By the end of her romp through Mt. Pleasant and parts of King Street, we were right there with her when she wrote, “I was grinnin’ like a possum eatin’ a sweet tater.” Yeah, girl!
