Charleston, like many tightly packed cities, has its share of neighborhood corner stores, but none are quite as special or unique as Burbage’s Self-Serve on Broad Street. After all, there aren’t many corner stores where you can get fresh housemade soups, barbecue, and sausages in addition to convenience store standards. Burbage’s is just one of those special places everyone tells everyone about, but it’s never outgrown its close-knit, family roots. Situated on the corner of Broad and Savage streets, plucked off a Southern Living cover, owner Al Burbage can usually be found behind the meat counter in the back waiting for you to come by and pick up dinner. No Sunday circulars or loyalty cards here; the only frills you’ll find at Burbage’s are a warm greeting and a helpful word about whatever you’re looking for.
