Best Councilman to Make a Stand Against the Midnight Bar Ban

Dean Riegel

Staff Pick

Like many of you, we didn’t take too kindly to the City of Charleston’s passage of the first reading of the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad late-night bar ban. In fact, we positively lost our shit, and so we came out of our caves with our claws out. Seriously, you should know better than to come between a journalist and his booze. While the mayor and the police chief had convinced City Council that a 12 a.m. closing time for all new bars was a must, one council member — Dean Riegel — never believed that load of baloney. Riegel not only voted against the initial reading, he proposed a series of rather reasonable solutions to the perceived troubles on Upper King. Sadly, no one listened. But Riegel has earned our respect nonetheless.
