Who doesn't know all about Plane Jane standing as one of "Charleston's best party bands" for years and years? It's almost a given that these guys land at the top of this category, as our readers' poll demonstrates from year to year. The local combo -- led by founding guitarist and Charleston band scene veteran Scott Sain (formerly of '90s band The Pondering) -- performs nightly around the Lowcountry at various music clubs, beach bars (mostly at the three Wild Wing locations), wedding receptions, oyster roasts, and private bashes, playing off a set list of over 400 (that's right!) covers of Motown and 1960s classics, '70s Top-40 hits, disco and funk favorites, modern rock, hip-hop, and pop tunes.

How do they stay on top? They have it down to a science based on reading the vibe of the crowds and delivering the right cover tune at the right time. According to Sain and trumpeter/keyboardist/singer Charlton Singleton, the songs on the master list of vital tunes below are essential secret weapons in the craft of Charleston cover band entertainment.

"Some of these are wedding reception songs, but they are vital to our business," says Sain. "The best thing we ever did was learn some of the hip-hop and rap songs. That was a huge change in our musical direction. It seems to be easier for people to dance to OutKast than Paul Simon. Who knew?"

"It really depends on the function," says Singleton. "If you are at a bar like Wild Wing, then you can play the good, solid, rock and R&B stuff all night. Anything that was a hit from the '70's or '80 is perfect for the bar. Anything that was a big hit from the '60s or Motown is good as well, and can work at private functions like business parties or receptions."
