Best Election Win Despite Seemingly Overwhelming Odds

William Dudley Gregorie

In the race to fill Wendell Gilliard's vacant District 6 Charleston City Council seat, there was very little question that William Gregorie had the chops to do it — he was regional director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for many years and had previously run a respectable campaign against Mayor Joe Riley. But for whatever reason a whole host of local politicos rallied against Gregorie. Mayor Riley, City Council member Tim Mallard, and state Reps. Robert Ford and Gilliard all threw their support behind Gregorie's opponent Tommie Fleming Coaxum. Not that it mattered; Gregorie won.
