Best Example of Giving Back

Ashem Farm, West Ashley

Staff Pick

Emily Ravenel Farrow died last year after a long life and left you a beautiful 44-acre waterfront property. That's right. You were given this gift because she wanted to see her family's land preserved in perpetuity. She deeded her gorgeous 44-acre West Ashley property to the Lowcountry Open Land Trust and protected the buildings through the Historic Charleston Foundation. Located next to Charlestowne Landing on the Ashley River, Ashem Farm is now in the hands of the very capable Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, which is studying a potential future for the sprawling land. Ultimately, it will provide waterfront access to the public and hopefully help connect the paddling trail the CCPRC is working on. In the near future, when you get a chance to walk in her garden, give a silent thanks to Farrow's generosity of spirit, because we can't make any more pristine waterfront land. Once it's gone, it's gone.
