When the wife of Mt. Pleasant Mayor Billy Swails got a ticket for allegedly speeding through an East Cooper neighborhood, the mayor didn't keep the bitching and moaning inside the Swails household. He took it public. In fact, he decided that the true culprit here was not his wife, but the Mt. Pleasant police department who had the audacity to be ticketing folks for speeding, i.e. breaking the law. In Billy's world, the solution was simple: The cops should be tracking down hardened criminals instead of setting up speed traps. Surprisingly, Swails had the gall to claim that his complaints about the MPPD had absolutely nothing to do with his wife's ticket. No one that we know believed him.
