Elliott Summey’s Sidewalk

Staff Pick

This year the men and women of North Charleston learned that when it comes to sidewalk repair, it pays to be the son of the mayor, as well as a county councilman. Or at least that was the feeling that many felt when word broke that the City of North Charleston paid $37,000 to fix a sidewalk and landscape a portion of property owned by Elliott Summey. While Summey argued that there was no nepotism involved here — even going as far as to say that he was going to sell the house because city workers destroyed his camellias — you can’t pass by the property today and not marvel at the city’s craftmanship (metal railings, sod, new bushes) and wonder why the cracked sidewalk in front of your house doesn’t get the same treatment.
