The only hanging plants we’ve ever kept alive came straight from Hyams. Explaining to a sweet (and patient) employee that a green thumb never sprouted, she pointed us in the direction of the loveliest, and apparently hardiest, flowers. We also know some of the city’s finest arborists always send their clients West of the Ashley (and beyond!) to this James Island gem. The garden center has been keeping it green since 1981 — in addition to their Folly Road storefront, Hyams also offers a planting service, fountain installation, and delivery to all customers.
A frequent BOC winner, Hyams doesn’t have some secret to success. Owner George Hyams says it comes down to service. “We have just wonderful employees — our folks are unbelievable and we have great customers. This is a fun business, and we try to make it fun.” When asked what we should be excited about for spring, Hyams rightfully points out, laughing, “Well, spring probably started two months ago.” But you still have time to deck out your yard, y’all. “It’s been really something,” says Hyams. “We’ve been packed every day, the colors this time of year when it’s not too hot are just so beautiful, we have a big variety this time of year.” —Mary Scott Hardaway
