Best Gathering of Hipsters

Jeff Mangum at the Music Hall

Staff Pick

Like a Gathering of the Juggalos, former NMH frontman and godfather of modern indie rock Jeff Mangum’s Charleston appearance was as much about the music as it was about the culture the fanbase created. From record-store recluses to ruthless Pitchfork readers to a number of serious musicians from the Charleston scene, the crowd was about as representative a sample of South Carolina’s hipster subculture as an anthropologist could ask for. Oh yeah, and Mangum killed it. Overheard in the balcony, spoken by a wiry young hipster clutching an $88 vinyl box set of Neutral Milk Hotel’s complete recordings that he had just bought in the lobby: “It cost way too much, but I regret nothing.”
