I think the high-point of my career at the Charleston City Paper will be when I was asked to judge the first-ever Mac-Off. I proudly wore my judge's badge at the Visitor Center on a fall evening and scarfed down the most comforting of comfort foods. Thirteen local restaurants, including Palmetto Café, King Street Grille, and 82 Queen, served up three-ounce portions to hundreds of people. There were traditional and creative versions, and hits and misses. Chefs added bacon and short ribs, while one place even wrapped the mac up in an egg roll. Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ and Crave Kitchen and Cocktails emerged victorious. The event had a couple of snafus — too many people, long lines, not enough space or trash cans — but it was nothing that some gooey mac couldn't solve.
