The idea was first brought up in 2013 — a plan to turn the old train trestle running below the 1-26 overpass from Mt. Pleasant Street to Woolfe Street into a greenway. The problem? The seven acre, 1.5 mile parcel is owned by Northfolk Southern. So far it appears discussions of the proposed plan have stopped, and that’s a crying shame. Not only could this idea transform a blighted area, but it would provide a safe highway for bikes, and repair the division between the Eastside and North Central. As the city looks to the Upper Peninsula to expand, it would be smart to consider adding green spaces. A tech hub is all well and good, but if we’ve learned anything from Steve Wozniak, it’s that places to ride your Segway are a must.
