Lowcountry Local First's agricultural program has done a lot over a few short years. They've helped encourage farms to start Community Supported Agriculture programs, and then supported the farmers by getting the word out. They've established a robust program that pairs up young apprentices with established farmers to learn the trade. They work with four farms and teach all aspects of farming, from seeding and soil prep to harvesting, delivering, and selling. Some of those people manning the tables at the farmers market on Saturday mornings are apprentice farmers, learning as they go. For enhanced educational opportunities, LLF has a sustainable ag class and a farming business entrepreneurship program at Clemson. It's a well thought-out program that has already produced graduates like Matt Frye and Drew Harrison, who started Roots Ice Cream and work at Thornhill Farms and Greenhearts, respectively, carrying that positive momentum forward into the community. The next facet of the project is an incubator farm that will be launched very soon.
