CofC joining Colonial Athletic Association

Staff Pick

For years, the College of Charleston has enjoyed fierce regional rivalries with the likes of the Citadel, Appalachian State, and Davidson while competing in the Southern Conference, but with every "mid-major" school eyeing a jump to greener pastures, CofC decided last fall to move its athletic programs to the Colonial Athletic Association. Motivated, some say, by the school's desire to pump up student recruiting in wealthy northeastern media markets, CofC will become the southernmost school in the conference, which spans the coast to New England. As new basketball coach Doug Wojcik settles into his second season, the Cougars will forego opposing homecourts like the Roundhouse in Chattanooga for new foes at George Mason, Drexel, the University of Delaware, William & Mary, and Hofstra. It's not the first time CofC has moved conferences, but come July, the maroon and white say so-long to SoCon.
