Best Most Dangerous Way To Get Around Town

Staff Pick

Biking is one of the best ways to see a city. Cruise past shops and dodge traffic while taking in the sights and smells unique to the place you’re visiting. Charleston has at least two bike-share programs, one through the city and one run by Affordabike. Rent a bike (and helmet!) and visit all those spots Conde Nasty has been raving about. But watch out for, well, everything. People, cars, rickshaws, golf carts. The streets are narrow and the people behind the wheel are something like the second worst drivers in the nation. Charleston Moves and other organizations have made some strides in the way of bike safety awareness/respect, but don’t expect anyone to let you drive down the street like a normal car. Tie those helmet straps tight, or you’ll end up like Humpty Dumpty. —Mary Scott Hardaway
