Charlton Singleton has been at the top of Charleston’s “Best Of” lists for so long now, as a musician, bandleader, and event organizer, that it can’t be much of a surprise anymore. But perhaps this year it’s a little sweeter to be chosen as Best Musician, simply because he hasn’t been around town nearly as much as before. Singleton has been leading the fast-rising jazz band Ranky Tanky around the world to increasing acclaim and popularity, but he’s glad to see that people back home are still with him.
“It shows that people are still aware,” he says. “They’re still paying attention and following us. Anytime you have those things as an artist, that’s all you can ask for, is that people notice your work and give you appreciation.”
Singleton still feels the love from home even as he’s out on the West Coast with Ranky Tanky. “We’ve been blessed to be heard, we’ve been blessed to play the places we’ve played and experience everything we’ve experienced,” he says. “It’s something I don’t think any of us could’ve imagined. And everyone in Charleston’s been so great and supportive of us. They’ve been like, ‘Go, do your thing, have a good time, and represent us like you always do.’” —Vincent Harris
