OK, we'll be honest: We were hoping somebody would buy the old Charleston County library next to Marion Square and turn it into a laser tag center. But after developer Michael Bennett won a state Supreme Court battle against preservationists to build an eight-story hotel on the site, we're warming up to the idea. More tourists downtown means more jobs and more outrageously good restaurants. Same goes for the new hotels springing up on the northern end of Meeting Street, which could transform that corridor — and we're hoping it's for the better. We're all for new development, as long as the history and culture of the nearby Eastside neighborhood are respected.
