Charleston’s private bars — a.k.a. key clubs — were originally intended to keep the “riff-raff” out. And by that we mean non-white people. Which is why to this day, most of their members are about as diverse as a loaf of bread. Some of them don’t even allow women. But the Faculty Lounge decided to be a different kind of key club: the kind that only lets cool people in. Located on Huger Street in a former key club that we weren’t even aware was a key club, the watering hole features cheap drinks, a dance floor, video games, and a pool table — pretty much everything a good bar needs. It doesn’t cost much to become a member, and with the lack of bars in the Uptown area, it’s well worth the price of joining.
