Charleston County voters pick a strong school board

This critics’ pick is as much a vote of optimism as it is a vote of confidence. In 2012, the school board’s near-total dysfunction was obvious to anyone who sat through one of its coccyx-numbing four-hour slugfests. In November, the City Paper ran a list of endorsements for five open seats, making our picks based on factors like temperament, useful career background, and ability to work with others. Well, the voters picked three out of our five favorites. So far, the new board appears to be working out some kinks, and a couple of the old troublemakers are still on the board. But at least member Elizabeth “I Want it on the Record That I Said I Want it on the Record” Kandrac has called it quits, so we’re pretty happy (see below).
