Is Southern prep a new trend, or is it just something we started noticing lately? If Dumas is any indication, preppiness has always been a big part of Charleston fashion and always will be. The store belies the traditional modes of Ralph-Lauren-style merchandising. You won’t find a minimalist display in here. Golf shirts and pastel shorts are piled in stacks on tables crammed into a narrow storefront. Shoes are stuffed into a side window. A back sale room is cluttered with racks and rounders. But people absolutely adore this place. Dumas exudes Southern charm and an aura of frayed wealth. A purely Charleston institution. Despite the rundown hunt-club feel, a golf shirt will set you back at least $75. So don’t be fooled by appearances. This place is all about money.
