James Island County Park

James Island. 871 Riverland Dr. 795-PARK (7275)

An outdoorsman's (and outdoorswoman's) haven in the midst of the Lowcountry, the 643-acre James Island County Park has seemingly endless entertainment options for kids, parents, grandparents, nature lovers, even our canine friends. The mini-waterpark, Splash Zone, is open only May-Sept., but the 6,000-square-foot area taken up by the bouldering cave and 50-foot-tall climbing wall -- with lessons available nearly every day -- is open year-round, not to mention the paved walking, biking, and skating trails; picnic spots (complete with grills!); children's playground; campgrounds; a dock for saltwater fishing and crabbing; the annual Reggae Nights series in the fall; pedal boat, kayak, and bike rentals; and the off-leash dog area. The dog park is the only officially sanctioned area of its kind in Charleston County, and with a lake perfect for paddling and acres of grassy knolls, your pooch will think he's died and gone to doggie heaven. And everyone knows that healthy, happy pups make for happy owners.
