It’s no Globo Gym (what is?), but if you’re looking to get ripped and learn some self-defense moves, West Ashley’s Grand Champ MMA is the place to go in Charleston. Owner Kirk Royster and head coach Justin Proctor oversee a program that teaches everything from Muay Thai to grappling techniques and fitness training. A prime example of Grand Champ’s success is prized pupil Andy McWilliams. He lost 60 pounds in six months training under Royster and Proctor and won his MMA debut in January. Grand Champ’s Pineview Road facility is a gritty setting that includes equipment such as stones and kettle bells. (Think Rocky IV.) And if you go, you’ll likely find yourself in some sort of leg lock at some point.
