Best Place to Erect a Statue of Joseph P. Riley Jr.

Marion Square

Staff Pick

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. still has three-plus years in office, and we hope a long post-political life, but that's no reason to ignore the obvious: At some point, we're going to have to put up a statue of Joe. And when we say "have to," we mean have to. If we have to explain all of the reasons why this is a must, then you're just an anti-Joe asshole who will never be convinced otherwise. So, with that in mind, where exactly should we erect a statue in Riley's honor? Waterfront Park? The Market? In front of Charleston Place? The Spoleto office? The middle of the Crosstown? No way, no how. There's really only one place to put up a statue honoring the man who is the heart and soul of the Holy City: Marion Square. But first we're going to have to knock John C. Calhoun off his perch. That guy was a racist douche.
