The newly-opened West Ashley tavern The Tin Roof (housed at the old West Ashley Bait & Tackle building, just off Highway 61), is a low-key neighborhood tavern and budding music venue. They're also one of the most unique new hotdog joints in town. Open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., Tin Roof serves from an abbreviated but adventurous menu of specialty hotdogs (from the "Holy Dog Grill:) Mango Madness (mango salsa and trimmings), Rockin' Reuben (sauerkraut, bacon, swiss, and housemade sauce), The Chicago (sliced tomato, thin dill pickle spears, sweet relish, peppers, spicy mustard, and celery salt), the Mama Mia (marinara, parmesan, mozzarella, and peppers), Suzy's Winner Dog (pimiento cheese and chili), and the accurately-named Hot Mess (a dog smothered with chili, cheddar, and jalapeños.). They come piled on a crusty French roll with a side of hand-cut or sweet potato fries. Customers can pick the type of wiener — from spicy Italian sausage or chicken andouille to regular beef frankfurter or vegetarian portobella. They can be served grilled or boiled. The huge house specialties are a bargain at $5 a pop. Add a $1.50 can of cold Pabst Blue Ribbon, and you'll be a happy dog.
