14 Charleston area locations
Why? Why, oh why, does Blockbuster keep winning this category year after year? It must be the aesthetically pleasing yellow-and-blue logo or something, because it certainly isn't the in-store movie selection. We've had more nights end in disappointed exasperation at Blockbuster than at any local meat-market bars, even with the rental giant's new campaign to out-Netflix Netflix by allowing customers to rent movies in-store when they bring back a mail-order flick. Still, with 14 area locations and drop boxes galore, it sure is convenient to make it a Blockbuster night -- but only if you're wanting to rent a blockbuster movie. If you're looking for something that may be a little too obscure/dirty/independent for Blockbuster or one of its national chain competitors, head to 561 King St. and browse through 52.5 Records, which was our readers' (and our staff's) perennial favorite in the Best Place to Rent B-Movies category, which was on the ballot up until last year. The newly relocated store has the widest, weirdest selection in town, hands down.
