More than 100 years ago, the lawyer and anti-secessionist politician James Petigru famously said "South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum." Looks like that's still the case. Take the election of disgraced former Gov. Mark Sanford to Congress last year. Voters didn't care that the Luv Guv cheated on his wife with a woman from Argentina and used tax dollars to pay for part of the trip. Usually when it comes to political gaffes it's the politicians making them. This time, it's the voters themselves — and it looks like they've taken over the asylum.
