The No-Cruise-Ships flag is a curious thing. Despite its almost abstract nature — Is it a coffee pot? A spray bottle of Resolve carpet cleaner? A futuristic bong? — this simple red, black, white, and gray flag delivers a clear message: Cruise ships belt out dirty, nasty smoke — and they’re not wanted here. However, if you’re walking down Rainbow Row on a day when one of the floating cities is docked at the cruise ship terminal, all you have to do is look up through the trees and down the streets and you’ll see the top of the ship. It’s a mood-killing sight. And while it’s difficult for us to feel sorry for the folks living along the Battery, there’s no denying that nothing shats upon Charleston’s unique Southern charm like a smoke-belching behemoth.
