Wando High School
Mt. Pleasant. 1000 Warrior Way. 849-2830
At 400,000 square feet, Wando High School's campus is as big as a small liberal arts college. The burgundy and black Warriors educate almost 3,000 children of the East Cooper population boom. Ten years ago, the school had half that enrollment and not nearly enough space to house its students. At its old location on Mathis Ferry Road, students had to take classes in trailers out in the parking lot. This is the third year WHS has been churning out educated pupils in its new facility. Senior Lindy Frederick says her school has too many kids to pack into one cliché. There are the geeks, popular kids, band people, "Mara-Wando" pot smokers, farmers, goths -- any high-school stereotype found in a Lindsay Lohan movie -- and Frederick says everyone gets along for the most part. She thinks WHS is a good school. Her teachers are passionate about what they're teaching, and she likes her classes. The lunch is good, too. She likes the fried chicken sandwich and crinkle-cut fries.
