Best Public Shaming by an AP Photog

Mic Smith

Staff Pick

Last September, following a stop in North Charleston, presidential candidate and businessman Donald Trump called Associated Press photographer Mic Smith a “fucking thief,” according to an interview with the Daily Mail. The comment was in response to a photo taken during The Donald’s appearance at a convention hosted by the Greater Charleston Business Alliance and the S.C. African-American Chamber of Commerce, which showed multiple empty rows of seats at the back of the event space. It wasn’t clear what Smith had stolen, other than Trump’s thunder, but it’s difficult to argue with the photo. The candidate claimed that everyone in the back rows had surged forward to bathe closer in his golden-orange glow, but I was there that day, and the Republican frontrunner just wasn’t packing them in like he expected. Smith stood by the photo, telling The Post and Courier, “There’s no way getting around the fact that the room wasn’t full. He’s always claiming how he fills the room, so I thought it would be newsworthy to show it not full. ... I thought when I sent the pictures it might make him mad, but I was confident in the fact that the photos were truthful.” —Dustin Waters
