Five years after securing the funding to build a public skatepark, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission is still struggling to break ground on a site at 1593 Oceanic St. in the Neck. This particular site was not Park & Rec’s first choice, but they had to go for Plan B after the state Department of Transportation’s regulations made construction under an I-26 overpass near Meeting Street all but impossible. The last time we checked the official website for updates on the long-awaited skaters’ paradise (ccprc.com/skatepark), engineers were slated to begin soil preparation on the marshy site in March. Meanwhile, skaters have been making do with homemade parks, some more legal than others. The latest completion date we’ve heard from Park & Rec was April 2016, but we’ve heard that old song before.
