Best Reason to Buy Books Out of an Abandoned Restaurant

Blue Bicycle’s Temporary Pop-up Shop During Renovations

Staff Pick

Jonathan Sanchez, owner of our favorite local bookstore Blue Bicycle Books, made a serious investment in his business last year when he decided to renovate the space. Formerly long and skinny, the Blue Bike is still long and skinny but with significantly more space up front so it can hold more people during the store’s many book signings and events. There’s also a beautiful new wooden checkout desk that faces the street, instead of facing the inside of the store like it used to. All of this was designed by Sanchez’ wife Lauren Sanchez, an interior decorator and owner of Lauren Sanchez Design. While renovations were being completed, Sanchez and his staff sold their wares at a pop-up shop in the abandoned restaurant next door. And since bibliophiles and locavores in droves answered the store’s call for volunteers to move the books back into their new space when it was complete, the whole process went off with hardly a day’s worth of lost business.
