When André Bauer took time on the campaign trail for an awkward speech that compared providing free school lunches to feeding stray animals, most pundits thought he’d simply clarify his comments, which he did (he meant to compare stray animals to welfare queens). But Bauer has turned the slip-up into the key point of his gubernatorial campaign. That’s right. Not jobs. Not economic development. But whether welfare recipients should get a check if they don’t show up for a parent-teacher conference. Can you imagine lunch at his house? Bauer would probably go on and on about how he had to make lunch for himself and what an imposition it is to make you a sandwich. Then he wants to know what you’re going to do for him. Mow the yard? Trim the hedges? No? Damn freeloaders.
