The last year has seen the demise of a slew of small businesses that have been a part of Charleston’s downtown landscape for decades. From Morris Sokol Furniture closing up shop after almost 100 years and a few other mom-and-pop operations going the way of the dinosaur, it’s only a matter of time before rising rents give way to more and more national chains. Not that we’d turn away a few Glamburgers and Skinnylicious Chicken Pot Pies from everyone’s favorite dessert mill — the Cheesecake Factory. —Dustin Waters
