Best Sneak Peak at Rising Stars

The Ballad of Shovels & Rope

Staff Pick

Last year, the Moving Picture Boys released the much anticipated, crowd-funded documentary about the rise of Shovels & Rope, Charleston’s sloppy-tonk darlings. An intimate look at life inside a van, the film shows Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent’s road to “Birmingham,” the song that changed their story forever. From the time Hearst began writing the hit on the couple’s Johns Island porch until the day they accepted several honors, including Song of the Year, at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, The Ballad of Shovels & Rope caught it on tape — busted washing machines and all. And the film is as sweet as the rock ‘n’ roll love story at the center of it.
