Best Young Nun in High Heels in a Play

Sister James in Village Playhouse's Doubt

Jan. 15-25
Village Playhouse

Yep, seriously. Under that austere, shapeless habit, young Sister James (Katherine Chaney) rocked a pair of saucy little slingbacks. This costume faux pas likely arose to give Chaney a bit more eye-level parity with the rest of the cast. Still, as a Catholic school kid myself, the sight of those incongruous shoes peeping out from beneath the ecclesiastical frock crossed so many wires in my head, I swear I heard Yeats whispering in my ear: "And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, / Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"
