When Charleston Fashion Week organizers announced the inaugural Stiletto Stampede would take place last March, runners — female and male, vets and newbies — stepped into their most sturdy heels and started training. There was $10,000 at stake for the winner, and though many who showed up just seemed to be there for the fun of it, there were definitely a handful of serious contenders in the crowd. The winner was Trixie Kawasaki, a very tall, very fast, and very outspoken drag queen in platform heels and a pink feather boa. Trixie made an appearance on the runway later during Fashion Week, much to the amusement/confusion of the crowd. This year’s stampeders have been warned: Trixie might look a little different, but she’s a fierce competitor.
